Veterans Tribute at Kaskaskia College

Eagle Pedestal About the Tribute

There is a great deal of pride in this country for the role our men and women in the military service have played, and continue to play in preserving our freedoms and liberties. Many communities and civic organizations host veterans’ events, or have established memorials in honor of those who lost their lives in service of our country. Now a group of citizens in five southern Illinois counties are taking that support to another level with a unique and heartfelt project. Since 2008 these individuals have been collecting funds and planning for the construction a Veterans Tribute on the main campus of Kaskaskia College, located seven miles west of Centralia, Illinois.

This public project is widely endorsed in a highly patriotic region of dedicated Americans. The Veterans Tribute will be a noble site to honor and pay tribute to the veterans who have and are serving this great nation. The Trustees of Kaskaskia College are very supportive and have dedicated campus land for the site of the Tribute. This project has several unique features, including: living and deceased names of past and present veterans along with their branch of service inscribed on granite walls, recognizes all honorable discharged veterans as heroes and patriots, an education facility for students to learn about the history of our democracy, and this will be the only known veterans’ honors project of its kind on a college or university campus. The project cost is totally private funded. A volunteer steering committee of veterans and non-veterans are leading the development of the project. Architectural services are donated by BLDD Architects of Decatur, Illinois.

Phase I of the total project will be dedicated this summer. This phase includes two 6’ x 70’ walls with mounted black granite plates to accommodate 25,200 names; a sculptured American Eagle with a 10’ wing span mounted at the center of the Warriors Court; mounted seals of the five branches of the military services; American Flags and cherry trees on the perimeter of the Tribute. Phase II will consist of additional walls to accommodate veterans names and their branches of service. Finally, Phase III will consist of the construction of an educational facility. This one million dollar project is well on its way to completion.

The Veterans Tribute at Kaskaskia College acknowledges all veterans of the United States of America, living or deceased who are connected to the Kaskaskia College district(Counties of Bond, Clinton, Marion, Fayette and Washington). Veterans who served in peace time or war who reside, have resided, or related to anyone who resides within the college district are eligible for recognition and everlasting tribute. We simply cannot do too much for the uniformed men and women who have given their service to our country.
